Details
At Hell’s Gate National Park, you are the explorer. This is the only national park in Kenya where you hike, bike, and climb directly through the heart of an untamed landscape—a dramatic, geothermal wonderland carved by the Great Rift Valley. With its towering red cliffs, steaming vents, and wildlife roaming free, Hell’s Gate offers an immersive, adrenaline-fueled adventure just two hours from Nairobi. It’s not just a park you see; it’s a park you feel.
A Landscape Forged by Fire
Established in 1984, the park’s name comes from the narrow, dramatic gorge cut by ancient geothermal forces. Covering 68.25 square kilometers, its compact size belies its immense visual impact. The entire area is a testament to volcanic power, with the nearby Mount Longonot’s last major eruption in the early 1900s scattering ash that still blankets parts of the valley.
The park’s iconic scenery, from Fischer’s Tower to the towering gorge walls, famously inspired the iconic landscapes of Disney’s The Lion King and provided the backdrop for Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life.
